Summary:

Strengths:

  • The School of Business and Management Novo mesto (SBM) is integrated in regional environment and mostly connected with companies that participate in student projects, seminar theses and case studies, provide professionals for teaching, provide practical training and topics for diploma theses.
  • For a number of years, SBM has been organising the international conference “Challenges of Globalisation and the Socio-economic Environment of the EU”.
  • Practical training in companies is well organised and commendable. Same holds for the rules on its recognition. Once a year, SBM organises a meeting with companies participating in practical training and with the aid of surveys and other gathered data analyses the realisation of practical training.
  • Staffing is stable and appropriate according to SBM’s first and second cycle study programmes. Since August 2011, SBM has been using Criteria for the Election to Titles in accordance with SQAA’s Minimum Standards for the Election to Titles.
  • Students can equally participate in SBM management according to legislation. They are acquainted with the work of student council in which they can also independently organise.
  • Study contents are practically oriented mostly in the first cycle but also in the second cycle study programme. Teaching methods are contemporary and interesting to students. Students and teachers are in good relations and communicate well with each other and the staff in support services.
  • Students emphasize the following strengths: small groups, accessible teachers, good communication between students, teachers and SBM management, practical focus of the first and second cycle study and focus on problem solving. Students also emphasize the adaptability of timetables and the possibility of striking an agreement with teachers and supporting staff.
  • SBM has contemporary and well ordered premises in Novo mesto and Ljubljana that create simulative learning environment. Lecture rooms are appropriately equipped with ICT. Financing is stable and the library has appropriate staff and is properly organized.
  • SBM has an elaborate quality manual and carries out wide ranging student surveys.

Possibilities for improvement:

  • A more active role of the Alumni Club could enable a more systematic and better monitoring of learning outcomes and competencies of graduates and their employment.
  • All SBM activities in connection with informing (future) students and in connection with employers should be systematically managed by the Career Centre (introductory week, aid for students in their search of employers for practical training, etc.) which at this moment is formally inactive, while activities are being carried out in a fragmentary manner.
  • SBM should focus on realising its vision which emphasizes an important role of SBM at the European level. SBM’s very modest integration in the international environment does not follow the vision. SBM should strengthen its internationalisation for instance by increasing the number of foreign HE teachers.
  • SBM should strengthen its connections with public administration (also in practical training) and provide the non-business sector with strong professional support in order to strengthen its position and influence in the region.
  • SBM should make use of good material conditions and the knowledge it combines in order to provide managerial workshops, various entrepreneurial modules and similar trainings in addition to the supplementary study programmes that it already provides.
  • SBM should use its research potential and try to achieve better research results.
  • SBM should participate in joint applications to tenders within the EU programmes of lifelong learning (not only IP, Jean Monnet and Leonardo da Vinci); for instance within the Coalition of Knowledge where it would be possible to use the advantage of connection with companies in the region.
  • SBM should strengthen its cooperation with the business sector /…/ and its endeavours to win research or counselling projects and thus improve its financial stability.
  • SBM should develop a comprehensive quality loop.
  • SBM should publish reports on student success, results or summaries of student surveys, teacher excellence, etc. in order to strengthen the culture of quality.
