The Agency, all its bodies, applicants and experts must comply with the regulations governing quality assurance in higher and higher vocational education. The main task of the Agency is to determine whether higher education institutions, in addition to legal provisions, meet the criteria or meet the quality standards set out in them, as well as other regulations of the Agency.

The Criteria for accreditation and external evaluation of higher education institutions and study programmes specify the procedures and conditions for accreditation and re-accreditation of institutions and study programmes. The criteria for external evaluation of higher vocational colleges specify the procedures and conditions for the evaluation of higher vocational colleges. All regulations of the Agency take into consideration the European standards and guidelines for quality assurance, (ESG) applicable in the European Higher Education Area.

Higher education in Slovenia is governed by the Higher Education Act and higher vocational education is governed by the Higher Vocational Education Act. Higher vocational education is characterized by a limited autonomy in comparison with higher education, for it is regulated by other regulations published on the website of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport.
